This sounds like something someone would say if they realized they weren’t encouraging the struggler as much as they were congratulating the winner.

Idk about that one. I find we are often encouraging, even to those that likely won't cut it. I think there are all sorts. Some people encourage everyone. Some people think everything's impossible and nobody will ever be able to do anything special. And some people are realistic and tell it like it is, and may call it wrong by smaller margins, and have a grey area where they can't tell one way or another.

Who determines success? Your idea of success might not be the same as mine. What if all I want is a warm bed and food on my table? Thats the problem with this quote. It gives people a free pass to insult others who they deem lazy based off their own goals.

It’s not even remotely curious. It’s exactly what we should expect to happen.

If he said this, he said it to an audience of people he was trying to look good for. He’s an asshole in real life and has made fun of college students for their career paths.

Now we just praise and worship people who won't.

That....that’s the encouragement Neal. It’s the prize at the end of achievements. That’s the fucking point

I see coaches, teachers, employers and a lot of folks giving encouragement to those who try. Where's Neil getting his data? Like many of his sweeping statements, it's pulled from his butt.

When people see others praised for their success, that IS ENCOURAGEMENT to be successful

Thats because success is better or more valuable or desirable than effort like...almost always.

Great quote, agreed. Good guy - but he got caught up faced ruin in allegations post #metoo. He was probably just acting like a guy, good role model and able to get a new generation and/or demographic interested in science. Unfortunately he found success in New Salem. Welcome back to the world of dogma and personal destruction despite innocence.
