This quote makes sense in context of friendship, not much else. Even that disregarding banter.

Why is there an apostrophe after insults? Why is there a semicolon? Why is this the most poorly written quote I’ve ever seen??

This guy's quotes keep appearing here and all I have to say is the cognitive dissonance is strong with this one.

Sorry, that’s just BS. It could be argued it’s evidence you are weak, but it isn’t evidence of you respecting them.

Will you quit with the fucking Taleb quotes, please?

    Dr-Google

I see almost everyone criticising this quote. Yet, I personally find it quite helpful in understanding the why *"I worry about something hurtful, wrong and / or rude has been said to me, about me and then trying to understand why I even care that this has been said to me...."* So e.g. a friend calls you stupid directly to your face, you're done with the friend, yet you do not know why you cannot let go and keep wondering why it bothers you so much. So getting to the answer, welp - I cannot let go off what they said because I respect the person and some of their opinions so much. Maybe not this one about me being dumb, but heck, they have said true and nice things before so this one bothers me more than I want to accept, because I respect the person. **And shouldn't anymore for sure!** I probably wouldn't feel as bothered about a random person saying I was stupid because heck, the stranger doesn't know eff about me. Makes sense?

Who is this fat man and why are you posting his shitty quote
  • Posted: July 10, 2019 07:28

Oh, so that's why completely anonymous people on the internet talking shit makes people so incensed. This quote is absolutely nonsense. Being insulted is a matter of personal ego, not what your thoughts are about OTHER people.

This guy and his shitty quotes. So insults from a stranger should never bother you? Gtfo you hack philosopher.

If they're your equal peer, maybe. If they're your boss at the workplace or a leader of your nation, it might just be because you're scared shitless for how they might use that power over you against you.

    _Space_Commander_

Another ridiculous quote. Someone spouting insults demonstrates their character in the context of the situation. You can be bothered by the ignorance or emotional immaturity of the person and demonstrate zero respect for them since the character of that person portrays a deeper symptom for their current behaviour.

    whatsavalidusername

To me, this means that people you don't respect can insult you and it won't bother you nearly as much as if someone you respect insulted you. IMO if someone is being insulting just to be rude; they're probably not worth respecting.

I agree. I've had the though that I'd have to care about someone's opinion in general to care about what they thought of me specifically.

Taleb is one of the most thin-skinned people I've ever had any type of communication with. I don't know him at all. But about 10 years ago, maybe more, he emailed me a long rant full of personal attacks and basically just whining because I wrote a criticism about some of his theories and criticized the strategy of his defunct and failed hedge fund on some message board. I think it was on Wilmott forums, a board dedicated to quantitative finance, trading, risk management, etc. I couldn't believe he would personally write to me with such harangue. I was literally half his age at the time, maybe even younger, and I felt like I was reading something written by a 3rd grader. I showed it to my colleagues and was tempted to forward it out because it could have easily gone viral on wall street but decided against it.

Nassim Taleb is an asshole that start tweet wars with other statistician. Maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong, but there is one certainty, he's a fucking dick when he present his thoughts.
  • Posted: July 10, 2019 07:28

    jollyZOLLIE

I'd agree with the man. If someone says something insulting to you, then it should only bother you if you respect their opinion. Otherwise it's some dickhead saying dickhead things.

    freddymerckx

Nah, the moment I am insulted, that respect evaporates

  • Posted: July 10, 2019 07:28

    lemansucks

I have read all of Taleb's books, seen a number of interviews and find that he has a very simplistic smug way of creating soundbite like quotes that seem wise till you really think about it. If you have low self esteem, anyone's insults bother you, even someone you regard as sub-human.

100% disagree. An insult can still be insulting even if said by someone you loath.
  • Posted: July 10, 2019 07:28

    KubrickIsMyCopilot

Sort of, but you have to distinguish between an insult and a *slander* for that to be true. If it bothers you that someone calls you incompetent, yeah. You consider them important enough to either be wounded by their opinion or think others will listen to it. But being bothered that someone goes around calling you a criminal, that's likely because of the potential consequences.

Well it says "evidence" and not "proof", so I'm willing to give it a pass. Many people here seem to be missing the distinction, though for all I know, it was lost on Taleb as well.

Lot of people hating on this quote, I like it. No clue who the guy saying it is, but it reminds me of William Blake's Proverbs of Hell which are all slightly dissonant sounding proverbs that kinda make you think and kinda sound nice at first glance. Basically I see this quote as: Dont let the insults of people you dont like bother you; you empower the people insulting you by even acknowledging them. Additionally, if it does bother you then there must be something to admire there, so maybe reflect on that. Perhaps the person criticizing you has a point!
