Truly a comment worthy of gold.

I had a guy tell me this when we were both approaching 50. I now have my degree at 52.

Let's just say that people get a PhD instead of a Masters because it's a labor of love. If you don't love the labor, do a Masters.

Yes I’ll still be 40, but with even more crippling debt and depression than before.

I find this simple insight so powerful. Do or don’t, you’re still going to be there.

I see the point from the first guy. If being 40 makes you not want a PhD, maybe you don’t want to spend your time and money on school at that stage. Reasonable.

A lot of people in this thread are approaching this statement from a financial standpoint. I recently decided to go start college at 30 years old. I was self employed and making great money, however I felt unfulfilled and what I really wanted to do requires a degree. To come even close to what I was making in my previous occupation I need to get a masters in my new career field, and it's still sufficiently less. It's not always about the money.

The question is, how much debt will you have to take on because of it, and is it worth it. If it makes sense, do it! If not, skip it. Information is free (or almost free) today. Go for the paper if it'll get you better pay.
