A couple of years ago, I told my supervisor I was doing my best only to have her tell me to do better. At the time, I was waking up at five to be out the door at six, traveling two hours to get to work, spending ten hours at work, traveling back home two hours, and then working from home for the two to three hours I was awake. It was the worst experience of my life, and I will never repeat it, but there are definitely times when your legitimate best is deemed not good enough by the people who sign your paycheck. At that point, it’s best to find someone else to sign your paycheck (even if said paycheck is smaller than the last one).

Yeah you gotta look for yourself. My "best" is really nowhere near good enough for most people. I work part time and go to school part time, but technically I could be working full time with part time school. I already tried doing both full time and full time, and full time and part time, to the point I had mental breakdowns, once sent to the ER. Now Even if my life is extremely pathetic compared to other people, at least I don't feel like I wanna kill myself or feel absolutely worthless. I will take that for now.

I have an honest question, when do you know that you're doing all that you can then? I always feel bad when I'm not doing something to the point of both mental and physical exhaustion, I feel that if I don't hit the barrier I could have done better.

No one ever told me this and I worked myself to the point of wanting to jump off the building I'm working on. I wake up at 4, dont get home till 5 and have to go to bed at 8 to do it all over again. I got told I was doing a few things wrong and took it as I'm not doing a good enough job even though I work harder that 90% of the people here. You definetly need breaks and I'm slowly getting back to a place where I feel good

I am at this point right now where I need to tell myself to slow down and let myself rest. I had a really big interview on short notice yesterday. So after work, I went home and prepared until 11 pm, went to bed, woke up and prepared some more. After the four hour interview and three hours of driving I got home and tried to do some homework and work on my budget. I was tired, drained and against my thoughts, needed to rest. So I did and boy was it great! I feel refreshed today and will get right back to all my the things I need to do when I get home from work today. Burning yourself out does not help. Self-love and hard work are the keys to success.

I just quit my 22/hr 3rd shift job after 3 years because of the toxicity there. I tried to keep going but I couldn't cope or take the stress anymore. I feel weak. I can't bring myself to move forward. I feel trapped. HR failed me so many times. Idk if I need therapy or what, but can't afford it now.

I worked for my father for a little over 4 months doing residential painting recently. Left for more money at another company. Now, this may sound like an exaggeration, but there were weeks where I was picking up slack for other workers and would wind up doing the physical labor of 2-3 other painters, as well as assuming a supervisor role. As a professional painter, meaning that this is my chosen trade that I take quite seriously, I love my job. But redlining myself to keep up with unrealistic expectations could have got me into a real bad situation... I'm currently recovering from what seems to be acute tendonitis (things like writing are an issue), several issues with my back, and a chronic issue with my shoulder. This is not the way to work. This is the way you don't work. To anyone struggling to keep up with unrealistic expectations professionally or otherwise, try your best to see your worth and then surround yourself with people who respect that worth. We might have to put up with a bad situation for a little while, but not indefinitly. Doing your best, IMO, is rarely that much more than anyone elses best. So if you're crushing it but your health, mental or otherwise, is deteriorating, you're pushing too hard and you're gonna burnout.

Never tell anyone the you are "doing your best". It means nothing to someone asking you about the status of anything you are doing. Always be more specific! Whenever someone told me they were doing their best I would tell them that I didn't know what that means. Does your best mean that it will be done today, tomorrow, next month?

This is so true, and often, what it means is making sure to take care of yourself(sleep /eating right), so can be at your best, mentally and physically, and as a result. Minimize your mistakes, manage stress better, and make good decisions. You owe it to yourself, if nothing/no one else.
