I just moved to Edinburgh from Philadelphia last week (my favorite city) to live and work. After a long struggle I found a fantastic room in a flat, but finding a job is proving to be incredibly stressful. Had a conversation the other night with a friend back in the US about the fear of failure and the struggle to be so far from all my family and friends. Posts like this that I randomly see really give me a confidence and happiness boost.

Keep at it!!! I moved to Thailand after being born and bred in Australia. I thought I'd never get the hang of an Asian picture character language. But the letter combinations are slowly starting to make sense! Not to mention how much I've learnt from living here for a year and my vocab is increasing by the day. It helps that I teach 1st grade and can stay in the classroom when they are doing their Thai language subjects! MAN they learnt a lot in kindergarten! Not one of them has bad handwriting. Its incredible.

One of my go-to phrases is similar to this "You either win or you learn" It helped me a lot over the last year developing my first ever app [Wobbl](https://wobbl.co.nz/), it was meant to take 3 months to build, but ended up taking over a year of blood, sweat and tears, and when it was finally done, the Cambridge Analytica / Facebook scandal went down and Facebook removed complete access (It's a social media app that combines Facebook/Twitter/Youtube/Instagram). We had to start from scratch with the lessons we learned but we got there. As long as you're learning, you're not failing. Sorry for the overshare.

Watching Bob Ross late at night was something that really gave me a lot of comfort when I was struggling with anxiety and doubt while studying abroad in Germany. It made me think of home, but in a way that also allowed me to really be at peace with not being home for a while. It was also one of the few shows that was fully in English and had no German commercial interruptions, so it was refreshing in a way to just hear my native language softly spoken for an hour. I told my parents about it, and when I got home they bought me a Bob Ross t-shirt as a joke. Good memories. P.S., you’ll do great, just allow yourself to be immersed and it will come naturally. You certainly won’t regret traveling and studying abroad. Good luck!

I have a very big flaw that this absolutely helps me with, part of my job is to figure out how to do things more efficiently, and in my company's proprietary system, more often than not, the answer to that question is that I can't find more efficiency with the process in place. Even though my manager understands that this is the case for a lot of things, i can't help but feel like I failed in my task instead of looking at it that i learned a new part of the system and can now answer more questions about it than I could before.

As someone currently doing an exchange college semester in another country and while battling against my home uni to accept the changes of both academic programs so that they can accept the studies that I did abroad, I so understand this, I so want to stick this in an email and send it to my home uni. An exchange program should be about expanding your horizons, to see a different way of teaching and learning not freaking replicate what I have at home... (sorry I needed to vent)

Cool man i like seeing stuff like this! I am officially starting my second year of residency in Osaka with my wife. Today i had a big hurdle going to the doctors for the first time myself! I do music and when i first came here a couple years ago to collab and do shows never thought it would become my home officially. I picked up the language like a kid and luckily with the help of family and friends I can communicate and get around some. I agree no better way to learn something, anything than to get out there in the thick of it! 乾杯!

Best of luck in learning a foreign language. You need to be committed, leave your pride aside and don't be afraid to talk. That's the only way you can improve. Try to keep talking/thinking in the foreign language even at home or with friends. Another thing that helped me personally was to find a local program I like watching so you are practicing while sort of relaxing. Make the most of your experience abroad and have fun! :)

I feel like this is too utopian. When I fail my class, sure I might have learned a thing or two, but losing out on all that money is far more demoralizing than learning is moralizing.

I know that the recent popularity spike of Bob has generally been a lighthearted joke, especially the twitch channel, but this guy really is one of the most impressive people I've ever had the pleasure of getting to know, even if it's just through a painting show. I've been saying this for about 10 years. It was kind of an epiphany. One day I realized you never fail if you learn from the experience. You didn't fail, you simply didn't get the expected outcome, but hopefully learned how to get closer to the outcome you want. You also (hopefully) learned what not to do in the future, which is seriously valuable information.
