I’d just like to add that 3 years ago I was completely at the end of my rope, suicidal and just a shell of a human. I’m not just celebrating being clean but also the complete U turn my life has taken and all the accomplishments I’ve managed along the way, both externally and internally. If you are struggling with addiction or any other mental ailment, there is help out there and there’s also a life out there worth living.

Got my own 3 year coming up in a month and a half. You should be proud of yourself. That's a huge achievement, great job brother! Also if anyone is interested, after 15 years of hard drinking the thing that really helped me get sober was vivitrol. Fucking amazing stuff if it works for you (I've been told it doesn't help everyone that tries it)

Hurrah for you! I just got eighteen years, and after bouncing and bouncing for years, with people betting when I would die drunk, and who I would take with me when I did. Best wishes to you!

What a great day! My father was sober for more than 40 years, and man, it was a great way to grow up. Lots of celebrating quiet moments, lots of cherishing us kids, lots of forgiveness and understanding, and lots of love. I bet the people in your life feel so lucky they have you around. Have a wonderful day!!

Is it an important thing for (former) addicts to remind themselves daily how long they've been clean? For me I wouldn't like that at all. I'm not an addict but imo it would remind me of drug use, remind me of the fucked up things I've done and that would depress me and I think it would have me closer to using drugs all the time vs leaving the past in the past and not thinking about any of my horrible past that I'd want to forget.

My stepdad was sober for 27 years when he passed away. I got his AA chip tattooed on my arm in memory of him. I'm not an addict, but I do suffer from depression. On the bad days it reminds me to not self medicate. Congrats on your 3 years! I wish you many more.

Congrats!! I celebrated 6 back in January of this year. I have an Uncle that is 25 years sober. We keep each other entertained with stories of times that we were both "out there". I'm an alcoholic (you never stop being one) and he did really hard drugs back in the 80's and 90's. It's good to look back at times like that and reflect. It's a constant reminder for me at least to know how far I've come. Keep it up and here's to many more years of freedom for you 👌

So you have some advice for someone who definitely drinks too much but doesn’t know how to get off the train? No drugs- just booze. I’m at a point where I know I need to stop but nothing catastrophic has happened. How to take the first step??

Congratulations, but your still counting tho! Once you stop, that's it. No need to keep reminding yourself that you no longer drink. I drank near on every day for 24 years,i read kick the drink easily by Jason Vale and stop that shit dead the day I finished it, i know without a shadow of a doubt that i will never touch alcohol again.

Mean while on my day off I'm calculating how much whiskey I should drink before I go to the bar to have minimal spending, and avoiding getting drunk. I like my bah around .1 to .13 Result is 2 whiskeys over the span of an hour giving my self 25 minutes to get ready and get there. I'll spend about 2 hours there and get 2 draft beers. Ahh the joys of drinking responsibly.
