I have a friend who has long commutes like this sometimes and she does listen to a ton of books and podcasts but says it's still soul sucking to be trapped in traffic. I appreciate having a good outlook on it but it definitely takes a toll on her mental health.

I love pod casts, but the anxiety of bumper to bumper traffic is no small monster

I guarantee this guy has never had a 3 hour round trip commute for work in his life. I consider myself a pretty positive person but that shit wore me down so fast.

3hr round trip sounds bad no natter what. 3 hours a day 5 days a week thats 15 hours of your life each week out of your control. i couldnt do it. but then again i hate having an hour round trip so its not saying much

Nope 3hrs of traffic still blows. Yes, I listen to podcast/audiobooks, but I would rather be home with my family/friends then watching a bunch of insufferable people switching lanes - making the backup longer.

a 3 hour commute is fine but only long enough to find a new job or place to live... don't waste 1/8 of your life in goddamn traffic

Abundance mentality: create a world for yourself where you don't have to commute to work every day as your top priority.

3 hours driving every single weekday is terrible for your mental/physical health. This type of thinking is more toxic positivity.

Fully disagree. Three hours at home listening to podcasts or reading is wonderful. Three hours in my god damn commute listening to podcasts or reading is nauseating, stressful and not leisurely. You are exhausted from the lack of sleep, the commute takes a mental toll on you and you just want peace to not have the extra mental baggage of that commute knowing that work will be ready when you get in. No time for a peaceful breakfast, commutes will never replace the time you could use to feel more rested, you're thinking about your day earlier, you are checking the stops, you're squished into your little section for an hour and a bit before walking or changing busses/trains/cars/what have you, and if you are driving you need to be alert on the road... Whoever wrote this doesn't know life. Edit: I feel for those who get motion sickness reading on the bus and train, too.

No, fuck that logic. Commuting is flat out terrible for people, both mentally and physically. While it may be unavoidable, it's not something to celebrate. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/commuting-takes-its-toll/

I did the 3-hour round trip commute for over a year and no amount of podcasts or music could make it more tolerable. Sometimes you just have to move. Now I live 7 minutes away from my office and my mental health is so much better. 15 hours per week of my life back.

Yeah... I use my commute to listen to podcasts, watch netflix, play games on my switch... I still hate my commute with a passion. The two mentalities are not mutually exclusive.

I had exactly that epiphany once. I worked at a place where I often had to work really late. And I'd take a taxi to the train station to get home. There was taxi sharing, and once the driver got me there JUST as the train pulled out. I'd have to wait 45 minutes for the next. I was SO PISSED. And then I realized that for 45 minutes, nobody could call me (no cell phone), pat me on the hand to get my attention (I had little kids), walk on my head to make me pet them (the cat), ask me to do any work... I could wander around and look in the shop windows; wander around the aisles of the drugstore that was open late... It was amazing what the mindset change did.

fuck this shit you're allowed to be annoyed. I hate this "never admit when something sucks" mentality people have. Don't be so negative it's all consuming but also don't pretend traffic is a GrEaT oPpOrTuNiTy for growth when you're trying to get home to see your family or go to the gym or some shit.

Spoken like someone who doesn't have a 3 hour round trip commute. This is actually my commute. I have to leave for work so early in the morning I'm too exhausted to do things like listen to podcasts or learn new languages.

    DragonVT

No. Just no. If you have a three hour commute, that's 15 hours a week away from you family, stuck in a car. That's gas burning and wear and tear on the vehicle. Let's say you make $1000 a week for easy math. That's $25 an hour. But wait, after your commute, it's really $18 an hour. You're robbing yourself blind with that commute. It also means that you're probably in 12 hours a day, plus the time you need for hygiene, laundry, cooking, groceries, etc. You literally have no life besides working and getting ready for work. Mine is 45-60 minutes each way. It sucks, and I'm working on fixing the problem. In the meantime, I do listen to audio books and find ways to use the time. It's still a stressful waste of time.

Scarcity mentality: My bills keep piling up and I have no money left over to pay down debt or save for my future. Abundance mentality: I have plenty of overdraft fees and extra stressors in my life that mean I won't have to live as long! Perspective.

Pseudo intellectual bullshit. Anyone can sit at home and pretend they have a superior outlook on life tweeting from there lounge room with a drink in the aircon. As soon as he is actually in traffic I guarantee it's a completely diffrent story

That's lovely and all, but listening to audiobooks for 3 hours a day is small consolation when you want to be spending that time with your kids or the like. "Perspective" also includes understanding that not everyone has the same situation as you do, and that not every problem is solved by thinking about it a different way.

Fuck that! Dude is spending like 15 days worth of time a year either driving to or from work. Half a month of his life lost to being in traffic every damn year. Guy spends as much time on his commute every year as he has vacation time which includes nights and weekends.

    Generico300

If you're spending 3 hours a day on your commute and working 8, you're effectively subjecting yourself to a 30% wage tax by spending 11 hours on work but only getting paid for 8. I guess that's fine if your perspective is delusional.
  • Posted: April 13, 2019 22:16

    Crazeeeyez

Terrible example. That's not a matter of perspective, it's a matter of priorities. How do you want to spend your time? With your family, coworkers, friends, etc or forced "reading"? I had this three hour commute, listened to a ton of audio books and podcasts, etc., but eventually I said it wasn't how I wanted to spend my time.
