As a 70+ year old man this filled me with incredible anxiety.

You never "make it" some time in the future. All we have is now. And not everyone wants the same things out if life.

This definitely buys into the young person's naive notion that there is a future free of stress. I have a great wife, six figure job, and so called made it. Just as stressed as freshman year of high school. Actually more because now others rely on me. Life is hard. It is supposed to be hard. Embrace the suck and appreciate the good stuff.

So... I'm 71. The married, good house, good job bits and so on are OK... but my adult kids have moved back home? Ummm....

    WinterF19

It's ten years from now. The kids have finally fallen asleep, freezing from the outside temperatures that have slowly crept inside. The generator finally died, but you managed to find enough blankets to keep them warm through the night - you hope. Your spouse cuddles up closer to you for warmth as you suddenly remember that today was meant to be Christmas. Things haven't been the same since the nuclear fall out - you live in Australia. It's not meant to snow on Christmas.

God, I hope not. That means at some point I was forced to have kids I don't want. And possibly convert to Christianity.

This is just the worst. Picture this: It's ten more years later. Your wife divorced you because you work too much, and you're "distant". The kids are with her this Christmas night, but you got to have them on Christmas Eve. Your consolation prize is that your geriatric dog is snoring next to you. You're otherwise alone with one hand on your dick and your other hand gripping three fingers of bourbon while you watch It's a Wonderful Life in your tattered pajamas.

I did that. Treat others with respect, graduate high school, get married before having kids, don’t follow dreams that you have no possible chance of reaching, visit different countries, don’t be a burden on society, don’t be jealous of others and save for retirement. Your life, your choices.

My aunt told me once when at college a few people were sitting around talking each having had a couple drinks. They started a “where do you see yourself in ten years” discussion. Various people say “partner at a law firm” or “making my first million.” One said “taking my son to a little league game.” She thought “This is one worth dating.” Thirty five years later they are still married, he is partner at his architecture firm and their net worth is over $1M. Keep your priorities straight.

When you have kids and a spouse and nice home and a good job, the hard work is only beginning. It's hard work maintaining a relationship with your spouse when you have kids and a full-time job, it's hard work affording a nice house and cars that your family is used to, and hard work keeping the good job. And it is back-breaking work to raise your children not to be assholes. You've set yourself up for a lifetime of hard work. Congrats, I guess?

3 years ago, I started writing my goals down. I did it every day for about a year. In two weeks, I check off the final goal. Even with that, I don’t feel “I’ve made it.” It’s more like climbing a hill only to find a mountain at the top. For me, this isn’t bad. I was just hoping for a bit more of a plateau before continuing my climb

I have already been here. Then a few years later it all falls apart. Then you get back together. Life's complicated and regardless if your goals, be happy in the moment you have when it's good. When it's bad realise that it won't stay bad fore ever. Live ever day like your going to die tomorrow. We all die not every one lives.

I’m at that ten years later now... and have been blindsided by a depression of ‘so what now’ once I’ve achieved all these things. This attainment approach isn’t as healthy as focusing on the continually evolving journey, and I’m having to find that out the hard way.

Picture This: It's 10 years from now, You're married to an abusive Wino. Nice home, impending foreclosure. Good Job. It's Christmas. Your kids are finally asleep. You and your spouse are on the couch, he's having yet another drink and listening to music. It's snowing outside and if you're lucky you get to see tomorrow, a Saturday. All the hard work, was it worth it? Will you make it?
