The fruit tree analogy isn’t bad but the problem with the “last thing” part is that it isn’t true. Fruit trees grow fruit multiple times and then it gets picked. The real analogy is that you have to keep growing fruit because once you stop or give up on it that’s when things go to shit. You can’t expect one thing to make you happy forever.

The only point of fruit is to make more fruit trees. You're better off enjoying the process *right now*, don't put value off in some abstract future. Life is a circle, not a line

I had a buddy in my 30s when I was broke and homeless. He was doing well, and helped me get a job. In my 60s, I was broke and homeless (2008) but got a job in the (remote) town where he and I first met. One day a broke and homeless old guy came by asking for a job. I was my buddy from 30 years before. Motivation gets you thru times of no money, better than money gets you thru times of no motivation.

In the spirit of "if it makes you feel any better" - 43, reasonably well paid job, wife, daughter, house, 2 cars, got into IT after sending myself to college in the evenings and doubled my salary over 10 years. Also, not working in the hell hole I did for the last 8 and now working with good people for a good company. I still feel like I've achieved nothing though. Pretty sure I blame social media

This is why I decided to follow my dream. I am 20M, went to big Uni out of high school, always had 4.0 blah blah. Majoring in computer science, decided that I don't want to be hunched over at a desk all day typing on a computer. Decided to transfer to glassblowing, I currently make glass labware and glass art(pipes, pendants, ect) and I've never been happier. There's no point to life if you're not enjoying it, so why waste time doing what doesn't make you happy when you can instead do what does make you happy. Don't let them tell you you won't succeed. Everyone's definition of success is different. Mine is happiness in people enjoying my art. Stay positive, sending good vibes from NJ

Just keep in mind there is a fine line between being miserable and grinding. You gotta be happy where you work unless there is serious growth opportunity or you're early in a start up. I could expand on this more but just saying make sure theres a purpose, you mentioned not accomplishing anything. Gotta be happy so you can be the best dad, husband, friend etc.

The last thing to grow on a fruit tree is the fruit itself. Plant your seeds. Bad weather may come and fuck up your fruit tree. But it will come. There is always a sunny day in your future. And remember. Your someone else's sunny day too.

You’re too focused on work. It sounds like that’s where you get your sense of worth from. You need to focus on your life. Work is just a means to live. Many many years ago we had skills like growing food, building shelter, hunting, etc. These days we press buttons on a keyboard and get an allowance (most people at least). The accomplishments you strive for should be happiness and being cool with where your life is at. Go out and find what you want your life to be about. Examples being:: a spouse, children, fun activities, hobbies, partying, etc. Work is just a modern day survival technique. If you spend your whole life waiting for some big break, then you might be let down in the end.

Something I've learned as an adult is to stop measuring my worth with grand accomplishments. You don't need to win first place, you don't need to be famous, you don't need to prove yourself. Is your life enjoyable? Are you learning and growing in some way? Are you kind? Congratulations, you're doing life right I'm sure you're accomplishing something, both at work and at home. Something as small as helping an old man with his groceries is an accomlishment. You've affected someone and helped their day go better! If people didn't do all those little accomlishments the world we live in would collapse. TL;DR: You're accomplishing so much, you just have to look closer.

Work is not the only thing in life. Sometimes growing in others places is what we need. I have kinda been feeling like and decided to not subject myself to my own tour tire and have been thinking where else can I grow? Is it internally? Like working on honesty, kindness- volunteering? Learning a new skill. Working toward a vacation? Putting more effort into meeting new people? Physical improvements, “Try that new gym or class I have thought would be fun”.

But before you get to see any 'fruit' you have to water that tree. Also you see the blossom long before you see the fruit. If you cant see any results despite working for something for years, you're doing something wrong. Sometimes people will never see the fruit. Dont be to optimistic people. Allways keep in mind something can go wrong. Its all about the right attitude. Not pessimistic, but be ready to fail.

This doesn't take into account the fruit is only present a very short amount of time, you gotta seize those moments! And it is only a viable food source a limited amount of time, enjoy those moments! And even if you get lemons you make lemonade, and if the fruit starts to rot you make wine or cider, always be looking for new opportunities.

What would it look like if you DID accomplish something? What would that be? And what are you doing to move closer toward that end? I have found in the past when I wasn't feeling fulfilled that I had never actually taken the time to DEFINE what I wanted to accomplish, or what GOAL I wanted to attain. It took me years to realize that the universe doesn't read minds--*I* had to conceive of the change FIRST... then I marveled at seeing those things begin to take shape...!

The problem is with how you are measuring your life. Life isn't just about 'accomplishments.' It's also about finding meaning. Are you an honest person? Do you find ways to do some good and help others? Do you have people in your life to love? Accomplishments can mean nothing without a 'why' to your life.
