I had a kindergartener at the school I worked at tell me he wanted to be a doctor when he grows up. I told him similar things, it's tough, lots of school, science, studying and practice. He responded: Or I'll just be a giraffe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How is this motivating? It's funny and everything because a 3 year old 'supposedly' said it but it's near on impossible to become an astronaut. Saying 'thats just x amount of things' means absolutely nothing lol.

Weirdly enough, I also have a 3 year old daughter that expressed interest in being an astronaut this morning. She saw one in a nursery rhyme on YouTube about the planets. Her: "I be that?" Me: "You want to be an astronaut?" Her: "Yes, I be astnot." Me: "Okay, sure! Cool!" That's how a real life conversation with a 3 year old goes. r/wokekids

I mean sure if you can actively believe in the fallacy that everything is "Just x things" I guess you could say your entire life is just three things. Being born, living and dying. Or maybe just two things. Or one. Simplify anything enough so that it sounds brief and easy. Does nothing to help. This is just very hollow forced positivity.

I used to want to be an astronaut until one day, when I was about four, I watched a Discovery documentary about the Challenger. My dad said I cried like the world is about to end when I saw it blew up, and that’s it for my astronaut dream; it was good while it lasted.

This reminds me of quantum mechanics excercise classes. On the blackboard would be the excercises you had to do that time. It would say 'Ex. 4 and 5' and you would be like "Oh, that's only two, maybe I'kll be able to do them during this class for once" and then after you started it turned out they were divided in parts a, b, c, d-i, d-ii, d-iii, e, f, g-i, g-ii, h, etc. At the end of the excercise class you'd only have done half of exercise 4.

The implication being it requires great perseverance, acumen, fortitude, and diligence to attain just the requisite college degree. I don't know...flippancy doesn't galvanise me into action or change my perception of attainability; each task is still as intimidating after they've been enumerated.

This is actually the same kind of method I use! Especially during midterms or really stressful/chaotic times. I just tell myself I ONLY have 3 papers, 2 exams, etc. and then I tell myself “and that’s it!” It started as a joke but has become something that really helps me to compartmentalize.

I used a strategy like this to tackle my addiction (s) and get my life back on track. I heard it referred to as eating the elephant, which stuck with me. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at time. I couldn't quit smoking by stopping cold turkey, I tried countless times and failed equally as many times for YEARS until I stopped trying to eat the elephant in one bite and instead took several small bites. First I reduced my smoke breaks by one per day, then expanded the time between smoke breaks, then switched to vaping and put in a low nicotine flavor that was so disgusting I had to either smoke that gross ass vape or skip it entirely. I chose to skip it, the joy of smoking was gone. It's been over a year since I quit smoking and I am absolutely disgusted by the smell. That was only 3 steps to beat a habit over a decade old!

Reminds me of the episode of Futurama where Bender duplicates himself because he doesn't want to do two things (fold two sweaters), and by the end of the episode the duplicates have duplicated themselves infinitely out of not wanting to do things, and when the world is being destroyed, Bender asks the duplicates to do one thing with him (save the world). Initially the duplicates refuse, but when Bender says that "if we all pitch in, each of us only has to do one quintillionth of a thing", they reluctantly agree.
