I mean, they're still gonna have to build the ship.

90% of them will then stand on the shore looking out at the sea and declaring "Someone should build us a boat!"

Longing for the immensity of the sea or whatever won't do shit to help your build ship.

You will have created the demand...and some guy is going to come along and create the supply, teaching all those folks how to build a ship. And you'll be there, with all that longing.

Well I clearly can’t get to the fucking sea if I have no ship?

“...And guess what, you've wandered into our school of tuna and we now have a taste of lion. We've talked to ourselves. We've communicated and said 'You know what, lion tastes good, let's go get some more lion'. We've developed a system to establish a beach-head and aggressively hunt you and your family and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring. ...We will construct a series of breathing apparatus with kelp. We will be able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. It's not gonna be days at a time. An hour? Hour forty-five? No problem. That will give us enough time to figure out where you live, go back to the sea, get some more oxygen, and stalk you. You just lost at your own game. You're outgunned and out-manned.” - The Other Guys

Spoken like someone who isn't going to help build a freaking thing ;) In all seriousness, this needs a better translation. Something along the lines of "To build a ship, teach your crew to long for sea first, then their tasks will be joyful" Not elegant but still better at getting across the underlying sentiment I reckon.

I actually like this because we can work toward a goal and do all work but if we lack the passion and zeal... let me say this, if the passion and love and longing for the sea is there, the ship will be built better than if the tasks were just merely completed. Leaders inspire and empower.

Personally I find breaking the local dam located suspiciously close to the town is the fastest way to motivate people to build a boat.

I get what this is trying to say but it really falls into the issue of being *too* artsy. You should teach and assign work, that’s how you get the damn ship built. No sense in having a crew that dreams of the ocean that has no idea how to build or maintain their vessel.
  • Posted: May 26, 2019 08:49

    digitus27

It's about the driving force behind the knowledge of building a ship or being an engineer. Anyone who wants to go into space, and doesn't have the passion to discover it's vastness, will never build the skills necessary to do so.

The comments on this are oddly encouraging. In all honestly you need to do both. Have a vision, communicate it to people, show them the plan, delegate tasks, and remind them about their tasks regularly, and ideally give them a due date.

  • Posted: May 26, 2019 08:49

    HurtlingThroughSpace

Better translation: If you wish to build a ship, do not divide the men into teams and send them to the forest to cut wood. Instead, teach them to long for the vast and endless sea. Also never actually said by St.Exupery. But don’t let truth get in the way of a good story

    mushi1996

Some of these posts are so stupid... Sure you love the sea but you still need a damn boat. It's like saying "don't give astronauts space suits just teach them to love air"...

This applies to game design. Zelda is cool because the short term goal is to get the motherfucking *master sword* to defeat evil. I don't give a fuck about when a game or DnD campaign tells me that I apparently want to save a village or help some NPC rescue their friend.
