[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvskMHn0sqQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvskMHn0sqQ) Kurzgesgagt made a great video on how we live in a positive-sum world, and how by encouraging the growth of lesser-developed nations, we help ourselves. A selfish argument to make the world a better place.

So the nations with the highest percentage of high income people, also have a relatively abundant supply of the poor. I did not know that.. It seemed to me the more poor there are...the more poor people there are...

Everyone is trying to tear the quote apart. The quote is legitimate even in capitalist societies. The wealthy (executive level) rely on an abundance of workers to remain in power. Abundant supply allows them to demand as much labor as they want without giving anything up themselves. Once supply is restricted the rich are forced to be more humble or lose their heads.

Please don’t fucking apply an 18th century quote on contemporary economy especially when capitalism wasn’t even formally studied until the very end of Voltaire’s death (1778). First work of classical liberalism (somewhat representative of present day capitalism) is published in 1776 (Wealth of Nations) by Adam Smith. I highly doubt Voltaire would say the same if he had understood Keynesian economics and modern landscape of America.

Bullshit. Perhaps before free Market capitalism, in the feudal societies, but when individual rights supercede group wants, there is more than enough for everyone. Wealth in capitalist societies is not a zero sum game.
